Vida Lam attends Colgate Dental Students' Conference on Research

The American Dental Association (ADA) Foundation (ADAF) held their 51st Annual Colgate Dental Students’ Conference in Maryland as a way to invest in the future of oral health care by introducing outstanding dental students across North America to scientists from the ADAF Dr. Anthony Volpe Research Center, the ADA, Oral Health industry leaders, and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR).  One of the goals of the conference was to raise the participants’s awareness of the wide-ranging careers available in oral health research.

Vida Lam (DDS 2017), was presented with this travel award for her poster 'Role of bone sialoprotein in stabilizing tendon insertion into bone'. Vida was supervised by Dr. Harvey Goldberg in Dentistry's Summer Research Program, and competed for this travel award at Schulich Dentistry's 2014 Annual Research Day. Lam disclosed, "Thanks to the Student Summer Research Program with Schulich Dentistry, I had the opportunity to become involved with scientific research for the first time. Not only was I able to present our lab's findings to colleagues and faculty members at Western University, I also had the honour of meeting and presenting to esteemed members of the dental research community in Bethesda, Maryland. The ADAF conference allowed me to connect with some of the most innovative and inquisitive minds in the field of dental research from across North America".

Lam further remarked, "Touring the National Institute of Standards and Technology, as well as the National Institutes of Health campus, gave the student attendees a first-hand glimpse of cutting edge dental research projects. Leaders in the field of dental research spoke to us regarding their personal experiences in balancing their research interests and their clinical work, and how one does not preclude the other. I left with a deeper appreciation of the impact that dental research has on day-to-day clinical practice, and the importance of keeping a spirit of curiosity alive throughout my dental career."

The ADAF strongly supports today’s dental students as they pursue tomorrow's scientific explorations in oral health research for the benefit of the general public and future generations.
